Cartagena - City of Contrasts

The city of Cartagena is well worth a visit. The city has a long and fascinating history and yet is modem, vibrant and with all the facilities you could wish for.

The city was originally founded by Hasdrubal, the Carthaginian general, when the original city of Carthage was over run by the Romans in 230BC. It was from here that the famous Hannibal took his elephants across the Alps to fight against Rome in an attempt to recapture his birthright. The silver mines in the hills around Cartagena helped Hannibal fund the expedition. Unfortunately for him he was unsuccessful and Cartagena eventually fell to the Roman general Scipio Africanus. Later, the city became an important naval port under the rule of Phillip II of Spain.

Both the ancient and the naval history have left their marks on the city. There is a spectacular Roman amphitheatre which is currently being painstakingly restored and several other well preserved ruins for the visitor to admire.

Part of the old arsenal is now open to the public and work continues on the naval museum to improve. the facilities and the exhibits for the visitor.

The pretty harbour, guarded by hills, is an ideal spot to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee, listening to. the gentle sounds of the sea lapping against the harbour walls.

While you are there, don't forget to admire the submarine designed by Isaac Peral, the first to be used for military purposes.

High above the town is the old castle which can be reached by two methods...the hard way of walking up the hill or the easier, and more picturesque method of using the scenic lift, the entrance to which can be found by following the old city walls to the right from the harbour.

In September, the city will play host to its annual Romans and Carthaginians fiesta, when townsfolk dress up and re-enact the ancient battles. This is a truly spectacular event and is not to be missed.

Cartagena is a city that has something for everyone. For those who prefer the more moderd past time of shopping there are a wide range of shops and stores including the famous department store El Corte Ingles. A massive new shopping centre is taking shape on the outskirts of the town also. The Teatro Romano theatre in the city plays host to many top quality classical and modem musicians and there is a vibrant popular music scene for the young and the young at heart.

To get the most out of your visit to Cartagena, pop into one of the Tourist information booths, the easiest one to reach is under the city walls opposite the harbour, and pick up one of the free illustrated maps which guides you to all the wonderful sites on offer in Cartagena or visit the website of the town hall at www.ayto-cartagena.es . The website is available in English.
